The telephone lines from your local dial tone provider plug into to the central office ports located near the center the communications server / KSU.

The communication server ports are designated as follows:
- 1/2 is for line one and also used for line two if the telephone company delivered lines one and two on the same jack or line cord.
- 2 is for line two when delivered on its own jack or line cord.
- 3/4 is for line three and also used for line four if the telephone company delivered lines three and four on the same jack or line cord.
- 4 is for line four when delivered on its own jack or line cord.
If the communications server is equipped with an expansion module, you find two additional central office ports on the far right side of the unit. They are labeled 5 and 6:
- 5 is for line five when delivered on its own jack or line cord.
- 6 is for line six when delivered on its own jack or line cord.
